Happy Fourth of July! In celebration of me having the day off from work, I am mostly taking the day off from this newsletter. I say mostly because I am going to briefly complain about something irrelevant, and then let you enjoy your day.
Over the last 10 years, what do you think the Giants’ record is in games played on July 4? Go on, take a guess. You’re not going to be right, so it’s a pretty low-stress scenario. Do you think they’ve gone 5-5? 4-6? 3-7?
Nope, all wrong!
Ah ha, you may be saying. The Giants didn’t play on July 4, 2020, what with most of the season being canceled due to Covid and all. so perhaps they’ve gone 4-5? 3-6? Maybe, if we’ve been super lucky, 5-4? Is one of those it?
Again, no.
Ohhhh, you are presumably saying at this point. This is going to be an argument about how time is a fictional construct created by a primitive humanity in order to understand the fourth dimension itself, which completely renders moot the entire premise of the article.
Once more, no, and if you’d read the opening, you’d know that I’m not super interested in doing a lot of complicated writing at the moment.
No, the Giants’ record on July 4 over the last 10 years is 3-3.
Sure, one of those years was, as previously mentioned, canceled due to Covid. But there were another three years — normal baseball years, meaning 2013, 2015, and 2019 — in which the Giants did not have an Independence Day game scheduled at all.
This is wrong. This is a travesty. This is un-American, dammit. Every team should play baseball on every July 4. You are the national pastime! You are the only major North American sport in midseason right now. It is unacceptable to have a single team be idle. And yet three times in the last decade, the Giants didn’t play. And in two of those seasons, they were the defending World Series champions.
Sure, this year there are 15 July 4 games, and all 30 teams are playing. But how long until baseball does some stupid bullshit again for some stupid bullshit reasons? It’ll be soon, and we all know it. Major League Baseball loves its stupid bullshit, and maybe not next year, and maybe not the year after, but certainly it is coming up again that the Giants will not play a baseball game on July 4.
I don’t get how this was ever allowed to happen. It was a bizarre, indefensible decision. It shouldn’t happen again.
Thank you for your time. Now please enjoy your grilled meats and/or potato salads.
I'm HAPPY to read another complaint about the morons who run the MLB on July 4th! Gracias!!
(Yesterday I saw an old Juan Marichal clip - due to the anniversay of the famous 7/2/63 Juan/Spahn 16-inning game. Anyway, there he is @ his HOF induction, and who introduces him but Bowie Kuhn, that puppet Commish (redundant, I know), who now looks good after Bud Slelig (sic) and Paul Manafort (oops).)
Cretins and charlatans, everywhere you look.
Lol. You didn’t sleep well did you? 😂
